Clogged Arteries: an Empirical Approach for Identifying and Addressing Localized Highway Congestion Bottlenecks

چکیده

Introduction Congestion bottlenecks are severe traffic chokepoints where demand far exceeds available highway capacity. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) of the US Department of Transportation states that recurring bottlenecks account for the largest share of road delay in the United States (40%), far exceeding traffic incidents (25%), inclement weather (15%), construction (10%) or other causes (Federal Highway Administration, 2012). Recurring bottlenecks in urban areas are the focus of this research.

Using Archived Data to Systematically Identify and Prioritize Freeway Bottlenecks

Bottlenecks are critical components of freeway systems and are of increasing importance as congestion worsens in major urban areas. In the U.S., the Federal Highway Administration has launched a new initiative aimed at identifying key bottlenecks in each state. In Oregon, a freeway data archive has been established that stores vehicular count, occupancy, and speed data from over 600 locations a...

Statistical Analysis of the Road Network of India

In this paper we study the Indian Highway Network as a complex network where the junction points are considered as nodes, and the links are formed by an existing connection. We explore the topological properties and community structure of the network. We observe that the Indian Highway Network displays small world properties and is assortative in nature. We also identify the most important road...
